If your son is involved in a Winter or Spring high school sport, he can also practice and play Rugby because it is a club sport. The playing season coincides with the Spring sports schedule. We expect a COMMITMENT to attend every practice and game during the season.
We will play each of the other teams in our conference throughout the season. Games will be scheduled for either Friday night or Saturday morning. The game at Los Altos High School will be on Friday night.
Rugby tradition is for the home team to host refreshments or a BBQ after the game. We need parents to help with home game BBQs.
The top four of the conference teams will go on to post season play. The post season could continue through April (or May in the event we make it to the National Championships).
Our colors are red and black. The team-provided jerseys are red with black with black shorts and socks. Players will have to provide their own cleats and a mouth piece. Rugby cleats are recommended. Soccer, American football, or baseball cleats are allowed as long as there is no metal and, if applicable, the front toe cleat is removed.
We have practice jerseys that will be available each practice, but your son should wear sturdy shorts or cut off jeans.
The current player dues are on the team application. New players who are underclassmen get a discount.
Parents of players are encouraged to make donations or to solicit donations from their respective businesses to help in funding. See our donor page.
Donations have been received for individual sponsorships, available for those who cannot afford to pay full team dues.
Each player and club must be registered with USA Rugby. Player registration is through "certified individual player-participant" forms. CIPP forms include player information and release of liability. The CIPP fee for high school players is $30.00 (this is included in your dues). Upon completion of registration, each club is provided a $1 million per occurance/$2 million aggregate liability policy of insurance through St. Paul Insurance Company. We will register with USA Rugby online, but you must sign the USA Rugby Waiver.
Each player should be covered by his own medical insurance.
The team travels throughout the NCRFU to play. Primary travel will be within the Skyhawk Conference. Players who drive must be validly licensed, insured and have parental permission to drive and/or allow other players to go with them. We need help from parents to drive to away games.
We also travel to Southern California (e.g. Pac-10 Tournament, Internation 7s). We need help from parents to drive large capacity vehicles.
SVRFC, through the NCRFU and USA Rugby, has a no tolerance rule regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. There is also a no tolerance rule with regard to violence. There is no second chance. Players who use alcohol, drugs or exhibit violent behavior shall be expelled from the club and/or reported to the proper authorities.
Rugby is an ever-increasing sport of popularity in the United States. For players that have the required grades, SAT or equivalent scores, there is the likelihood for college rugby scholarships. The following known universities offer rugby scholarships: UC Berkeley; Brigham Young University, Brown University; Cal. State Monterey, Army, Navy, Air Force, and others. You should inquire if the college your son is interested in has scholarships. We at SVRFC will assist in writing on your son's behalf.
Northern California is one of the pillars of USA Rugby. Each year tryouts are held for the National Under 19 Rugby Team. Top players from our team will have an opportunity to tryout for the National U19 Team.
Rugby in the U.S. is run under the auspices of a parent non-profit organization, USA Rugby, with home offices in Colorado Springs, CO. USA Rugby oversees all adult, collegiate and youth rugby for men and women.
There are eight "Territorial" Unions under USA Rugby. One of the eight is the Pacific Coast Rugby Football Union (PCRFU); the parent union of three sub-area unions in which falls the Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU). NCRFU is the union under which the Silicon Valley Rugby Footbal Club (SVRFC) is a member.
For more information about Rugby see our about page.
There are about 30 high school rugby clubs in the NCRFU. The NCRFU is divided into 4 conferences: Sacramento Conference; Redwood Conference; Bay Conference and Skyhawk Conference.
Silicon Valley is in the Skyhawk Conference. The teams are:
- College Park (Bellarmine)
- Los Altos High School
- Aptos High School
- Peninsula Green (Menlo Park-Atherton)
- Valley Christian High School
- Live Oak High School
- Silicon Valley
Joel Roman wanted to play rugby and contacted Richard Kelly, Vice Commissioner for Northern California Rugby Football Union. Richard Kelly helped promote the Silicon Valley team and recruited our coach, Dean White. Coach White plays on a local adult team and has experience coaching youth Rugby. The team started informal practice in December 1999, was officially organized as a non-profit organization January 2000, and played its first conference match on February 18, 2000. The team also played summer "sevens."
Luke Seufferlein, Jeff Hynes, and JP Maksim were the succeeding presidents. Under their leadership the team went on to become Skyhawk Conference Champions and NorCal and Pacific Coast SemiFinalists, and to win against SoCal and International teams.
